Meaning

What Does "Practice" Mean Here?

1000 Days Practice

In this context, practice is not about self-improvement or performance.

It is a way of learning to observe the mind and respond more skillfully to daily experiences.

Through practice, participants gradually learn to recognize and let go of patterns such as:

  • Anxiety and worry
  • Anger and resentment
  • Stress and emotional tension
  • Self-criticism and habitual reactions

This approach reflects a core Buddhist insight:

Everyone has the capacity to understand their own mind and live with greater ease.

Purpose

Why 1000 days?

Meaningful change takes time.

The 1000-Day Practice is based on a long-standing Jungto principle since 1993:

Three years can change one's karma, and Thirty years can change society.

The emphasis is not on intensity or perfection, but on consistency.

  • Missing days is expected
  • Restarting is part of the process
  • Progress comes from continuing over time

To support participants, the practice is organized into 10 cycles of 100 days, with opening ceremonies held regularly via Zoom.

Stories

What Practitioners Say

The 1000-Day Practice is helping me to improve my emotional, spiritual and mental state. My mental afflictions are shifting to a new perspective, accompanied by a decrease in worries and an increase in calmness. My relationship with my wife and my family has improved. I'm less impulsive, more observant and less drawn to self-defeating behaviors and habits.

One of the things that first drew me toward Sunim and Jungto is that there isn't any dogma. I like how it's simply a philosophical construct one can practice to reduce one's suffering. It's also cool to be meditating with 4,000 other people at the same time.

I find myself trying to concentrate on my breath during the day at times occasionally now and have definitely learnt a lot from it so it's a great foundation I can hopefully build on. I'm really grateful to Pomnyun Sunim and the many utterly amazing people who have helped organize this.

KO

Kevin O'Sullivan

Dublin, Ireland

The 1000-Day Practice has started to build up discipline, change my bad habits, and has reduced my stress. I have become more energetic and happier. These positive attributes have carried on to my work bringing a marked improvement in productivity and impact.

How It Works

What the Daily Practice Includes

1

108 Bows

20 mins

A physical and reflective practice focused on acknowledging past actions and cultivating responsibility and compassion. Each bow is performed with mindful attention.

2

Meditation

10 mins

A seated meditation focused on observing the breath. The goal is to calm the mind and develop steady awareness.

3

Daily Sutra

5 mins

A short, selected reading provided each day. The purpose is to support reflection and insight, not belief.

4

Log Your Progress (Sharing)

5 mins

Participants briefly note their experience in an online group space, helping build awareness and community connection.

Principles

The Three Pillars of the Practice

The 1000-Day Practice integrates inner cultivation with engagement in daily life. Together, these elements create a balanced and practical approach.

Practice

Daily bowing, meditation, and reading to develop awareness and inner balance.

Giving

Participants are encouraged to donate at least $1 per day. Consistent giving supports shared activities and cultivates generosity.

Service

One intentional act of kindness or service each day. Service helps ground practice in real-world relationships.
